Dons Defeat the Mats and Celebrate the Seniors

On Tuesday, April 14, Acalanes hosted Miramonte for the final home meet of the year. It was also our Senior celebration, honoring the 29 seniors competing for Acalanes this year. Illias Kaplanes-Jones led the stadium in a remembrance of and moment of silence for classmate Amin Naroozi, who would have been part of this graduating senior group of athletes.

The meet highlighted the amazing talents of all of our athletes, and our seniors in particular. Varsity Boys won 95-45, and Varsity Girls tied 65-65. Both boys and girls Frosh/Soph won as well.  It was a great night on the track.

Some notable Senior achievements include Nevis Murphy’s win in the 1600 at 5:33.01, coming in over a minute before her next competitor, and Donovan McGrath winning the 110 hurdles in 19.98.

Other senior accomplishments: Harry Zimmerman ran a season best in the 1600, coming in at 4:31.89 in his last home meet as a Don. Senior Matthew Schwarz won the boys 200 in 22.96, and senior Cameron Thornton won the girls 200 in 26.89. Senior sprinter Julia Munter took the win in the 100 in 12.98, and Illias Kaplanes-Jones won the boys 100 in 11.4 and the long jump in 22’10.5. River Lockwood won the 300 hurdles in 40.54. Deonte Littlejohn continued to dominate the throws, winning the discus in 169’4” and shotput with a throw of 54’1”.

And let’s talk about the relays! The Acalanes girls 4×100 A team(led by seniors Julia Munter and Cameron Thornton along with sophomores Olivia Kemp and Isabelle Agnost) ran 50.27 for the win and the Acalanes B team (led by seniors Danica Green, Genevieve Tarsa, and Avery Titus and anchored by freshman Margaret Stirling) took third with 52.57. The Acalanes boys 4×100 A team (led by seniors Matthew Schwarz, Illias Kaplanes-Jones, and River Lockwood, along with junior Jackson Bosellin in leg three) took first in 42.39, and the Acalanes B team (Senior Luca Oatham running third leg, with sophomores Pengyu Chen  and Finneus Aiken, and anchored by junior Harrison Sheffler) taking second in 43.91.

In an exciting finish, the girls 4×400 team (sophomore Olivia Kemp, senior Tori Hiatt, sophomore Isabelle Agnost, and senior Cameron Thornton) put in a valiant effort and came up just shy of victory in a photo finish 4:09.37 to Miramonte’s 4:09.32. Finally, the varsity boys wrapped up the last home meet of the year, with the A team (led by seniors Illias KaplanesJones, Matthew Schwarz, and Julian Hood, and anchored by junior Benjamin Mickelson) took second in 3:49.65.
