Varsity Baseball Pounds Campo!

The Varsity Baseball team kept rolling with a 7-2 win over their rival Campolindo Cougars on Tuesday at sunny Ken Souza Field. The victory pushed the team’s impressive season record to 21-2. It was the perfect conclusion to Senior Night at the ballpark (see more below). This year’s squad features nine seniors who have all made their mark on this record setting program over their years. Coach Hornsby and the boys had their game faces on for this critical rivalry game.

The house was packed with family, friends and an amazing group of loyal, fun loving students who are always ready to cheer their team on to victory.

True school spirit was on display once again by the supportive student body!

The Cougars started the scoring in the 1st inning with a run to take an early 1-0. The Dons were not impressed. They countered with a touchdown and they didn’t miss the extra point! The boys put up 7 runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead after one frame. Third baseman Gavin Bender struck the biggest blow with a one out single that scored centerfielder Keegan Goddard and catcher Benji O’Rourke.

In the inning, right fielder David Gonzales led off with a single, Goddard singled and O’Rourke reached on an error before Bender knocked them both in. First baseman Sully Bailey then singled, left fielder Ando Butner doubled and shortstop James Stadt tripled, before David Gonzales came up for his second at bat of the inning and promptly doubled to left field to score Stadt with the final run of the first frame. Wow! Dons 7 Cougars 1. Now that’s a first inning! It was all of the scoring that the boys needed for the day.

Campolindo was clearly staggered by this blow. After a bumpy first inning Acalanes starting pitcher Peter Thorn began putting up zeros again. Peter, aka “Rubberarm”, was nasty. He pitched 5 innings and gave up a run and 5 hits, with no walks and 3 strikeouts. Pete only allowed three base runners after the first inning in another solid outing for the senior hurler.

The defense was simply outstanding. They recorded another errorless game thanks to several nice plays by outfielders Kegan Goddard and David Gonzales as well as infielders Gavin Bender, James Stadt, Mason Zirkel and Sully Bailey. The boys were flashing the leather all day.

Senior Jack Giorgianni made his fifth appearance of the season on the hill for the Dons. Jack sent Campo down in order in the 6th inning and gave up a harmless run in the 7th before he closed the door on the Cougars in a well thrown 27 pitch performance. The crowd exploded after the final out!!!!

The boys head to Camplindo today at 4pm to complete this week’s two game series and conclude the 2024 regular season. The NCS Playoffs start next week. Get there early for it is Campo’s Senior Night tonight. Let’s travel Dons Nation! One more to go. Let’s Go Dons!!!

Prior to the game the seniors were honored. Check out these great shots of Gavin Bender, Mason Zirkel, Jack Giorgianni, Everett Glass, Henry Souza, Benji O’Rourke, Sully Bailey, Aiden Yates and Peter Thorn, with their families.
