Girls Varsity Lacrosse Regroups After Spring Break with a 7-6 Win Vs University High School

The Dons returned from Spring Break ready to take on San Francisco University High School on the road Tuesday afternoon. Two players in particular, midfielder Lucca DeBiasse and goalie Addie Martin, looked rested and refreshed throughout the game. DeBiasse scored so many goals that we had to research the nicknames for various numbers of goals (more on that later) and Martin saved a whopping 10 of 17 shots.

The Dons kicked off the scoring against the Red Devils a few minutes in with a freshman to freshman connection when defender Reese Tierney brought the ball up the field, earning a 12m and passed the ball to Grace Colaco who had a nice finish to score. Martin did everything she could to protect the one goal lead, making multiple saves, but the Devils tied it up 1-1. Shortly after the Devils went a player down due to a yellow card, and DeBiasse scored her first goal of the game on the subsequent 8m shot.

The Devils tied it up again early in the second quarter off of an 8m. Not to worry though, because DeBiasse answered with her second and third goals of the game, which would have earned her a “hat trick,” but she wasn’t done scoring. The Dons went a player down due to a yellow card and Martin and senior defender Avery Ives held the Devils back as long as they could, but the Devils eventually scored to end the half 4-3 in favor of the Dons.

The third quarter started with Martin making yet another stellar save. Senior attacker Ella Thomason scored one of her own, a nice high corner shot to bring the score to 5-3. The Devils answered with three of their own to take the lead 5-6. Martin made another impressive save to keep the game close. Thomason found an open DeBiasse who scored her fourth goal to tie the game at 6-6. We learned that this would have been a “haul,” but she still wasn’t done scoring.

The Dons were up a player to start the final quarter from a yellow card late in the third, and had a nice shot that was saved by the Devils’ goalie. The Dons then went down a player again due to yet another yellow card, but were able to weather the penalty without allowing University to score. DeBiasse scored the final goal of the game off of a pass from senior attacker Tea Smith. With her fifth goal of the game, DeBiasse scored a “glut” of goals, and even more importantly, the go-ahead goal to bring the score to 7-6. Martin and the Dons’ defense held strong in the final few minutes of the game to preserve the win.
