Clean Sheet on Messy Field for Girls Varsity Soccer in 1st Pre-Season Game

The Girls Varsity Soccer team took on the Alameda Hornets last week in their first official pre-season game. It took some adjustment for the team to find its footing on the messy, grass field at Thompson Stadium. The Dons eventually found a nice flow of play, dominating possession in the first half. The first half featured five corner kicks for the Dons, but the back of the net was elusive on all five. Sisi Houston, Lucca DeBiasse, and Alex Salazar each shot the ball on offense, with DeBiasse’s being the Dons’ best chance of the half, but the Alameda goalie made a diving save, robbing the Dons of a goal. The Dons’ defense, held down by goalie Sara Tarnai, Tori Hiatt, Avery Ives and Avery DeMent, played well throughout the first half. The Dons and Hornets went into halftime at a 0-0 stalemate.

Early in the second half, Ella Thomason was taken down in the box. Though the linesman signaled a foul, the center referee elected not to reward the Dons with a penalty kick. The second half also featured multiple corner kicks for the Dons, but unfortunately the Dons weren’t able to finish them. Thomason, Stella Hamilton, and Salazar created shot opportunities in the second half, but were unable to score. The Hornets made some presses of their own in the second half, with the Dons giving them some extra chances due to multiple fouls late in the half. The Dons’ defense was able to hold off the Hornets to preserve the shutout for second half keeper, Melisa Adatepe. The final score was a 0-0 draw.

The Dons will play away at Pittsburg High School on Wednesday night at 7pm.
