JV Baseball “Don”inates Campo with 7-0 Win

The Dons played the second game of the double header against Campo on the road on May 4.  Given the date, I had every intention of repeating the article theme from last year as it was again Star Wars Day, aka “May the 4th be with you”.  I thought I could even tie it into my laundry with something like “Star Wash: Attack of the Clothes”. But then I saw all of the male Dons fans sitting in one set of bleachers and the female fans in another set of bleachers, separated by a grassy hill, so I thought a middle school dance theme would be more appropriate.  However, given how I still cringe every time I hear Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love”, which was the go to song at my middle school dances, I think I am just going to forego a theme for this article.

The Dons dominated all aspects of the game, snapping a 7 game losing streak.  Jake Colaco pitched a complete game shutout, going 7 innings giving up no runs on 5 hits, no walks, and 7 strikeouts while throwing an efficient 78 pitches.

The defense only committed one error, a significant improvement from prior games. Catcher Augie Martinez dialed up a good mix of fastballs and sliders with an occasional change up to keep the Cougars batters off balance. He also did a good job backing up an overthrow from right field to first base. Middle infielders Brady Wall and Brady Quinn turned a couple double plays and had a few other nice plays. The outfield continued to play solid defense as they have all season.

The Dons offense was extremely productive, scoring 7 runs on 7 hits, 4 walks, and 3 HBP.  Martinez continued filling up the stat sheet, going 3 for 4 with one single, two doubles, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBIs.  He has registered 7 hits in the last 3 games.

David Gonzales rejoined the team from Varsity and went 2-4 with with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  He also apparently has the ability to be in two places at the same time as he also showed up as a pinch runner on GameChanger during the Varsity game taking place at Acalanes.

Gonzales omnipresent

Isaac Copen had a single in the top of the 5th inning, driving in 2 more insurance runs.  Cole Gwaltney had the other hit on the day.  Quinn got on base 3 times the hard way via two walks and 1 HBP. David Roux was also HBP, extending his season total to 7, which is a whopping 30% of the team’s total.
