Varsity Baseball Pitching Dominates as Dons take down St. Patrick’s in Vallejo 4-1

Fresh off of their win against D1 power Monte Vista last week, the Dons were at it again on Tuesday.
Mason Zirkel got the start and came out throwing darts as he went 5 strong innings, giving up 3 hits, no earned runs and struck out 7. Sully Bailey made his second appearance in relief and closed the door on the Bruins, going two innings, with no hits, no runs and 4 strikeouts. The two Juniors combined for 11 strikeouts and no earned runs for the day. The Don’s pitching staff has gone 14 innings without giving up an earned run.

This recent, early season effort has them ranked #3 in the North Coast Division 1 rankings, behind #1 Foothill and #2 Pittsburg High Schools.

There was no luck of the Irish for St Patrick’s on Tuesday. The boys pounded out 10 hits on a muddy field in Vallejo.

The scoring started early when hot hitting Andrew Habas singled in the 1 st inning and was eventually knocked in by Sammy Lee for a 1-0 Dons lead.

Both pitchers put up zeros in the 2 nd and 3 rd inning, until the Bruins tied the game in the bottom of the 4 th . The tie was short lived, for the Dons came out swinging in the 5 th . James Stadt led off with a swinging bunt single on the wet infield to ignite the rally. Keegan Goddard was hit by a pitch, followed by another single by Habas on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze that scored Stadt. A single by Nikko O’Rourke kept the rally going. The big blow of the inning came from first pitch swinging Gavin Bender’s bat, when he doubled down the left field line.

The boys finished with 3 runs in the 5 th to take a 4-1 lead.
Habas, Nikko O and Bender each finished with two hits. Sammy Lee played solid behind the plate and led the team with 2 RBI’s. Mason Michlitsch and Benjie O’Rourke also added hits to the Acalane’s offensive attack. Defensively both the infield and the outfield recorded errorless games for the second game in a row.

Pitching and defense win games! The Dons look to continue their winning ways this season, despite the rough weather. The boys tough early season schedule continues with upcoming games against Foothill, Vallejo, Liberty and Pittsburg the next couple of weeks. Come out for a game! These boys can play.
