Tough Business for Dons

Coming off an energetic Wall Street dress-up day for Homecoming Week, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team was ready to do business with the Miramonte Mats on Tuesday afternoon.  All of the matches were hard fought contests and several of them delivered upside, but unfortunately at the end of the day it was a bear market with the team going down 6-3.    On the upside, our top line singles and doubles both won their matches with Ari Ruczynski crushing at #1 singles (6-0, 6-2)  and Emily Berkowitz and Kailyn Broad edging out their opponents in a back & forth affair (6-1, 3-6, 10-8).  In the #4 slot, Aamena Shipchandler added to the “W” column with a hard-hitting victory (6-4, 6-2).   In other singles action, Martha Burns had yet another nail-biter, but fell just short (6-4, 2-6, 5-10) and Nicole Parlett and Shipley Duff battled hard but came up on the losing end of their #5 and #6 singles matches.  Cate Condy also rallied consistently against a very tough #2 opponent losing 2-6, 4-6 in a match where the score was not indicative of the closeness of the match.  For her performance, Cate won Player of the Match for singles, so congratulations to Cate!

Rounding out the doubles, Ashley Donner and Olivia Dawkins also took the Mats to a tie-breaker, but couldn’t close the deal (6-6 (4-7), 2-6) and Lucy O’Brien and Marcela Wisniewska went down swinging as well (2-6, 4-6).   In additional line exhibition matches, there were strong showings from the teams of Parker Grenby/Sienna Moise,  Rachel Gottfried/Sarah Shepherd, and Liv Heglie/Lilou Picard.   Liv and Lilou were also awarded doubles Players of the Match for their great performances.  Congrats Liv and Lilou!

Overall, another strong showing for Girls Varsity, but as they say, “past performance is no guarantee of future returns” so we’re bullish on the upcoming schedule… Next up, a home match vs. College Park on 10/4.  Come out to cheer on the team next week!
