JV Baseball: Dons Blow a Tight Game Open in the 7th, Shut Out Northgate 6-0

After a frustrating 4-4 tie against Northgate Broncos at home, the JV Dons were looking to re-establish themselves in the return leg of the series at Northgate.  The redemption proved to be elusive for most of the game, however.  The game started off as a tense pitchers’ duel.  The Dons are used to scoring early and often this season, but this game was different.  The Broncos starter threw great stuff with a lot of movement, and — unlike Dons hitters — knew exactly where the strike zone boundaries were.  The Dons were able to get some hits and baserunners, but getting them home was problematic.  In the 2nd, Wyatt Cooper and James Stadt had back-to-back singles; Mason Zirkel got a single in the 3rd, but all ended up stranded.  The Dons finally caught a break in the 4th, when Wyatt’s hard grounder was airmailed past 1st for a two-base error, and Jake Boselli came through with a hot grounder down the 1st base line that hit the chalk for the Dons’ first run of the game.  The Broncos were able to escape further damage, however.  Things looked promising for the Dons again in the 5th, when Peter Thorn and Mason led off with a pair of solid singles, but the Dons couldn’t move them beyond 2nd.  The story almost repeated in the 6th: with one down, James Stadt walked and Jake Boselli got beaned, and both got stranded yet again.  The Dons were getting it done on the defense, so it was still a tense 1-0 game in top 7th, when the Dons got to face a reliever, and their luck finally turned.  Mason started things with a walk, Keagan Goddard lined a single to the left, Everett Glass drew another walk, and it was bases loaded with no outs, and there was no escaping the damage this time.  Sully Bailey swung at the first pitch and sent it way down the 1st base line for a very long single, worth 2 RBIs.  Wyatt stepped up to the plate and hit a towering fly ball to the RF gap for a stand-up double and 2 more runs.  Jake Boselli capped the big inning with a sac fly to score Wyatt.  And just like that, a nail-biter turned into a convincing Dons tour de force.  The Dons ended up with 9 hits in the game.  Wyatt and Mason led the field with full stats boxes: Wyatt 2 H (with a double), 2 R, 2 RBI;  Mason 2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI. Keagan, Everett, and Sully also collected base hits.
On the other side of the ball, Dons were dominant.  Peter Thorn got the start and threw a 3-hit, 6-inning masterpiece, allowing no runs and cutting down 5.  A double in the 2nd was the lone bright spot for the Broncos, but they weren’t able to advance past the 2nd base all game long.  Brady stepped in to close the game out, and threw a 1-2-3 inning to slam the door shut.  Dons defense was airtight, with no errors and a plenty of hard-hit balls fielded flawlessly. James Stadt sparked at shortstop for the Dons, with a few ince plays, including another 6-3 double play.
The Dons will be hosting Monte Vista in a non-league contest at home this Saturday at 2pm. Come see this team in action!
