Frosh Baseball team can’t catch up to Liberty High School despite heroic effort from Patitucci

The Acalanes Frosh baseball team lost both games in their doubleheader versus Liberty High School, losing game 1 by a score of 12-4 and game 2 by a score of 13-6.  With no healthy catchers available, Dominic Patitucci’s injured hand couldn’t keep him from playing 12 innings. Despite the injury, he had a few highlight reel blocks behind the plate, and threw out Liberty runners in Game 2 trying to steal 2nd base in the 3rd inning and 3rd base in the 5th inning.

Cruz Lopez led the team with 3 hits.  Cruz, Austin Wampler, and David Roux tied for the team lead with 2 RBIs each for the day.  Ben Pecci continued to cause havoc on the basepaths, leading the team with 3 runs scored.

David Gonzales got the start in game 1, pitching 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4 earned runs.  After David, a couple pitchers got their first action of the season.  Hank Bauer entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd with the bases loaded and got the team out of the jam by only allowing one of those runs to score.  He continued to stymie the Liberty batters with his patented slider/curve “slurve”, giving up only 3 hits with 3Ks in 2 1/3 innings of work.  He was also the only pitcher for the day to retire the Liberty shortstop, who ended the day with 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 plate appearances.  Sam Bishop pitched the 6th inning, giving up only 1 hit and no earned runs.

Cole Gwaltney got the start in game 2, pitching 4 innings while giving up 4 earned runs and registering 3Ks. Sam came in again to pitch 1/3 inning, and then Jake Colaco closed the game against the top of the order, allowing no earned runs, 2 hits, and no walks in 1 2/3 innings of work with some great defense in the outfield behind him from David and Ben.  The team tried to mount a comeback by scoring 3 in the top of the 7th and knocking out the Liberty closer, but in the end, the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Walks issued by the pitchers and errors by the defense continued to be areas of concern.  For the day, Acalanes surrendered 14 walks and had 8 errors versus 8 walks and 4 errors for Liberty.

The team is tentatively scheduled to play Bishop O’Dowd at Laney College in Oakland on Thursday, March 17th , and then will play a double header at home against Las Lomas on Saturday March 19th.
