On Thursday, the JV girls soccer team hosted the Concord Minutemen and cruised to a 9-0 victory. This game was never in doubt as the Dons dominated all aspects of the game and controlled time of possession. Despite the lopsided score, there were a few highlights on and off the field. On the field, as a show of good sportsmanship, the team did a great job of moving the ball around, including passes back to the defense/goalie (which I had to explain to my dad watching on the livestream that they were doing this on purpose). Coach Alex also added Caroline Tumilty, Madison Bernstein, and Cassidy Smith from the frosh/soph (aka Frosted Flakes) team and let all the girls play positions they weren’t accustomed to playing. Most notably, goalie Cate Mercier borrowed the jersey of her injured teammate Ella Culbertson, played striker, and proceeded to score not one but two goals (that must have been another of her New Year’s resolutions). Elodie Jensen also scored two goals, one off an assist from Maya Shinaman. The other goals came courtesy of Julia Munter, Evelyn Lee (assist from Grace Colaco), Grace Colaco, Caroline Tumilty, and one unfortunately off an own goal.
Off the field, I first wanted to thank the Eppinger family for investing in a portable space heater that they brought and generously shared with any fan in need. Second, I wanted to give a shout out to my young nieces Taylor and JJ. Not only did they come to the game, but they also provided entertainment in the stands and even tried to get scorekeeper Morgan Lyons to give the Dons “20 more goals” as they took a peek inside the press box. Lastly, I wanted to thank you the readers for making my last article from the Clayton Valley game the most read Acalanes Booster article on January 10, just edging out Boys Varsity Basketball. Perhaps this had to do with the fact that I kept clicking on it, but I still think it gives me bragging rights, not to mention the fact that it triggers a clause in my contract that doubles my salary.
