Last night the Clayton Valley Ugly Eagles (who doesn’t love that mascot?) traveled to Lafayette to face the Dons Boys Varsity Lax team. True to form, Clayton Valley came amped up with the bravado of a young wrestler auditioning for the WWE. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they were served a repeated smackdown.
Senior Goalie Blake Chehlaoui, made several impressive stops (yes, this writer is biased) and held Clayton Valley scoreless in the first Quarter. For that matter, the Dons’ Defense anchored by Connor Faust, George Churchill and John Cain seemed to be in synch, keeping CVC at bay for most of the first half.
As the first half progressed, both Cooper and Dylan Olson completed hat tricks, while Owen Estee ripped an amazing low-high shot and Zach Appel crushed a goal with 10 seconds remaining.
Up 11-1 at Half, Coaches Smith and Faust wisely gave opportunities for our rising stars to enter the mix. We saw solid contributions from Val Grossi (great up-high save), James Davis, Ethan Pancoast (4 GBs), Evan Banwart, Brody Darin, and Evan Malmquist, but the show-stoppers were Sophomore Griffin Rotundo and Senior John Cain. Rotundo’s scoop-and-score impressed fans and John Cain played like a man possessed winning a face-off, scoring a goal, and hoovering every ground ball in sight.
For all of the bluster from the Ugly Eagles, they were no match for the mighty Dons who won 14-3.
