The wind was blowing and the temperatures were chilly, but the Dons were hot with a 17-5 victory over Granada in their season opener. The powerhouse Middie trio of seniors Maya Wang and Haley Rurka and junior Grace Imrie controlled the pace of the game from start to finish. Wang and Rurka both had 5 goals and 2 assists, with Imrie adding 4 goals and 2 assists. Sophomore Megan Churchill had 2 goals and 3 assists of her own. Senior Hanna Hageboeck and junior Tea Smith rounded out the scoring with Hageboeck scoring one and Smith tallying one assist.
Imrie was also impressive on the draw throughout the game with 12 draw controls. Juniors Avery Ives and Ella Thomason controlled 3 loose balls a piece with junior Kelly Todhunter and Rurka controlling 2, and junior Maia Upp, Wang and Imrie controlling one each.
The Dons’ defensive squad played well during the game, limiting the Matadors to only 5 goals. Junior goalie Addie Martin did not face many shots during the game, but still managed to come up with 4 saves.
The Dons look to keep the momentum going in their next game on Thursday at 7pm at Berkeley High School. Go Dons!
