Varsity Baseball Crushes St. Mary’s Panthers as 3 Dons Pitchers Combine in a No-Hitter

The Dons Varsity Baseball team won a lopsided affair on Saturday 18-4 in a mercifully shortened 5 inning contest over St. Mary’s of Berkeley to get back into the Win column and improve their record to 9-5.

Tyson Bates winds up and continues the no hitter bid

The Dons pitchers have been inspired of late.  After throwing 2 complete game shutouts last week, and losing a 2-0 battle against highly ranked Berkeley High over the break, the Dons pitchers combined to no-hit St. Mary’s.  Henry Souza (Soph), Tyson Bates (Jr), and Miller Smith (Jr) combined to no hit the Panthers through 5 innings.  Another strong effort from the Acalanes pitching staff, Coached by Andrew Merken (Acalanes 2013), is helping the Dons through a very competitive schedule – winning 6 of the last 7.

The pitchers were not outdone by the relentless Dons offense even while missing a few key starters.  The Dons, slugged, stole, bunted, and walked their way to a bruising 18 runs on 13 hits including 17 RBI’s, 8 walks, 3 XBH and some steals.  Miles Bergman (Sr), Nico O’Rourke (Jr) , and Tyler Worthington (Jr) led the attack with 3 hits apiece, and Kyle White stayed hot going 1-1, with 2R, 2W, a stolen base and 3 RBIs including a long bomb to right just off the fence. Bergman was 3-5 with 3R and 3 RBI, while O’Rourke was 3-4, with 2R and 1 RBI.

Miller Smith on the mound finishes off the no hitter against St Mary’s

The defense did their part as well including some nice stops at 3rd baseman by Gavin Bender, some nice catches in Center by Andrew Habas and a nifty double play in the 4th to help workout of a jam – 6-4-3 – Dante Montgomery to Miles Bergman to Kyle White, who got a rare start at 1B.

it looks like a big hit!

This week D1 powerhouse Pittsburgh travels to Acalanes on Thursday at 4pm and the Dons travel to Mill Valley to take on Tamalpais Saturday at noon.
