Northgate Can’t Get Past the Hard-Hitting Dons, 11-3

Luke Souza comes home after a big hit

There was a good turn-out, on a beautiful afternoon, at Souza field on Tuesday.  Several of last year’s Varsity seniors were on hand and even Principal Shawn came to check out the streaking Dons squad.

Having been blanked in the first game of the series, the Northgate Broncos revealed they were going to play aggressively right from the start.  Their aggressive play paid off as they went up 2-0 in the 3rd inning.  However, with two runners on in the 3rd, their strategy failed when Sammy Lee (jr) threw out a stealing Bronco, ending the inning and changing the momentum of the game.

With one out in the bottom of the 3rd, Luke Souza (sr) drew a walk, Miles Bergman (sr) and Will Berrien (sr) both followed with hard hit balls which the shortstop couldn’t handle, and the Dons were finally on the board….and just getting started. Nico O’Rourke (jr) then smashed a line drive double to right center, scoring both Bergman and Berrien.  After Kyle White (sr) walked, Sammy Lee singled to bring home Nico, and later in the inning White trotted home on a wild pitch to plate the 5th run of the inning and give the Dons a 5-2 lead.

Henry Souza on the hill

Meanwhile, Henry Souza (soph) settled in on the mound and kept any potential Broncos rally at bay.  Every time the Broncos got someone on base, Souza would induce a double play, get the batter to pop out, fly out to the speedy left fielder Andrew Habas (jr), or simply strikeout the batter.

Logan Ketchum with a deep hit to left field for a double

The Dons bats weren’t done though.  In the 4th, White singled to drive home Berrien, Dante Montgomery (sr) doubled to right to bring home O’Rourke and White, and Lee scored on a passed ball.  In the 5th, Connor McPhail (sr) and Luke Souza (sr) led off the inning with singles, and McPhail came around to score on delayed Bergman steal.  In the 6th, Logan Ketchum (sr) led off the inning with a booming double on a shot over the left fielders’ head, advanced to 3rd on Tyler Worthington’s (jr) single, and sprintedhome on Lee’s sacrifice fly to right.  After all was said and done, the Dons plated 11 runs on 11 hits.

Souza handed the ball to Tyson Bates (jr) in the 7th, who promptly sealed the 11-3 victory for the Dons.  Fittingly, he fooled the showboating, Broncos final hitter on a wicked curveball to end the game, and the series.

It was great play on both sides of the plate for the Dons, who travel to face a good Monte Vista team on Saturday in a non-league matchup.  Their next home game is on Wednesday at 4pm.  Come on out and watch some of the best free baseball in the Bay Area.
