On Tuesday, the Dons got things started early with Miles Bergman (jr) leading the day off with a walk, stealing 2nd and coming into score on a double by Davis Diaz (sr), Luke Souza (jr), fresh of the football field, brought Davis in on single to put the Dons up 2-0. Unfortunately, despite hits by juniors Miles Bergman, Kyle White and Jack Cusumano over the next four innings, the Dons couldn’t come up with timely hits to bring them home.
It didn’t matter until the 5th inning as Benjy Braunstein (jr) was cruising on the mound, giving up only two hits and 1 run, while striking out 4 and keeping the Northgate hitters off balance. Unfortunately, the tide turned in the bottom of the 5th, in part helped by an ump who didn’t know the rule on an obscure play, which eventually allowed Northgate to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead. Connor McPhail (jr) pitched well to keep the game close until the 7th.
In the top of the 7th, with one out, Miles Bergman lined a single to center and surprised everyone by stretching it into a double. Brady Huchingson (sr), also in his first game back, singled to bring in Miles and tie the game at 3-3. Huchingson made his way to 3rd with some heads up baserunning and came home on a sacrifice fly by Diaz to give the Dons the 4-3 lead.
Unfortunately Northgate was able to put together 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th and walk off with a 5-4 win. It was nice to see the football players back on the baseball field. It will no doubt take some time for them to get their eyes back, but we caught glimpses of where this team is going.
Thursday: New Day and New Game
In Thursday’s action, the Dons bounced back and trounced Northgate 4-0. Michael Castelli (sr) and Sam Heyman (sr) combined for a 3 hit shoutout as the Dons cruised past the rowdy Northgate squad. The Dons pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and were nearly unhittable.
The Dons hits were provided by Jack Cusumano (jr), Kyle White (jr), Davis Diaz, Brady Hutchingson (sr), and Miles Bergman. Will Berrien (jr), Bergman and Diaz also tore it up on the base paths, combining for 5 steals, and 3 of the runs scored.
Friday the Dons travel to Concord High, Go Dons!
