Dons Golf Can Take the Heat

Last Monday, the boys’ golf team took advantage of the day off from school and hosted the Acalanes Invitational at Contra Costa Country Club. Truckee drove down from Tahoe and Piedmont came through the tunnel to play an 18-hole match. Acalanes A team made up of Krish Veluthakkal (So), Isaac Topp (Jr) , Durham Vail (Jr), Grant Gebhardt (Jr), Naveen Ahuja (Jr), and Oliver Stoneman (Sr) won the match, shooting a combined 373. Acalanes B team of JP Birdwell (So), Anthony Mullin (Jr), Mason Wampler (Jr), Chase Belhumeur (Jr), and Luca Potts (Sr) came in 2nd place with a 409. Piedmont finished in 3rd place, edging out Truckee by 1 shot. Low rounds of the day for the Dons were Krish with a 71 Isaac with a 72.

On Wednesday, both Varsity and JV had matches. Varsity went to Blackhawk to take on Athenian and won, shooting a combined 190 (+5) on the hilly course. Shout out to Durham Vail (Jr) with a 34 (-3) on the par 37. This was a gratifying win since the Dons have lost to Athenian in close matches the last two years.

Up in Moraga that same day, JV took on Campolindo at Moraga Country Club. The Dons beat the Cougars 204 to 225. Low rounds of the day went to Oliver Stoneman (Sr) and Owen Curley (Jr), who both shot 38. Nice way to bounce back after the tough loss to Foothill the previous Friday.

Rounding out the week, Acalanes headed to Rossmoor on Friday to take on Arroyo. The Varsity team, consisting of Owen Curley (Jr), Oliver Stoneman (Sr), Luca Potts (Sr), Anthony Mullin (Jr), JP Birdwell (So), and Ryan Weilbach (So), battled Arroyo AND the 90+ degree heat, winning the match by 75 strokes. Low rounds of the day went to Ryan and JP, who both shot 39, Luca shot a 41, Oliver and Owen shot a 42, and Anthony shot a 43. The final score was Acalanes 203, Arroyo 278.

Way to go Dons on a busy and successful week! Next up – Las Lomas, Albany and Mt. Diablo so stay tuned for updates!
