The Dons varsity flag football team had an eventful week, racking up the points and the wins versus Berean Christian on Monday and Miramonte on Wednesday. With a combined score of 59-13 the Dons dominance was on full display. On to the highlights!
Monday’s game was at BereanChristian in the afternoon sunshine due to the home team’s stadium not being equipped with lights. Despite having victories over Berean in the past, the Dons had never actually won on Berean’s home field. It was time to exorcise those demons.
Prime Time June Natal got the highlights started, deftly intercepting a pass on the Eagles first offensive drive and then catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Stella Beuchotte on 4th and goal from the 6 on the Dons’ opening drive. In the second quarter, Beuchotte hit superstar receiver Ines Coyne with a crisp pass. Coyne shaked and baked her way to the endzone for a 45 yard touchdown to put the Dons up by two scores. The defense continued to be stellar in the opening two quarters. In addition to Natal’s interception, safety Leah Roth had a great pass defensed and linebacker Avery DeMent recorded a sack. Late in the second quarter the Dons would strike for two more scores. Junior tailback Isabelle Agnost used her patented teleportation moves on a 20 yard touchdown run and Beuchotte found wideout Mira Clark in the endzone for a 15 yard touchdown reception. The Dons went into the half with a comfortable lead of 25-0.
In the second half the Dons would notch another score before taking their foot off the gas. A 25 yard completion from Beuchotte to receiver Santana Tamayo set up a 25 yard touchdown reception from Beuchotte to DeMent. On defense, the Dons continued to stifle the Eagles. Agnost went airborne and snagged an interception by outjumping an Eagle receiver. Behind the shifty legs of freshman running back Eloise Kemp the Dons would run out the clock and capture their first program win at the home of the Eagles 31-6
On Wednesday, the Dons welcomed the Miramonte Matadors to their home stadium and much like in the game versus Berean, the Dons struck early. The Dons first drive saw a healthy dose of the run game behind the speedy legs of Agnost. Agnost had runs of 15, 6 and 15 setting up a pass from Beuchotte to Tamayo for 20 yards and the touchdown. DeMent snagged the point after and the Dons were up 7-0. The Dons used the passing game on their second drive. Beuchotte found Coyne for receptions of 20, 5 and 8 yards setting up and option left to Agnost for the touchdown. The point after was good to Clark and the Dons were up 14-0. The Dons used a little bit of everything on their next possession. Coyne caught a 10 yard pass, Beuchotte ran it herself for 7, Agnost ran for 15, Natal chipped in with a reception for 5, Beuchotte found Yali Avrahami for 5 before firing a strike to Coyne for the touchdown. Clark again snagged the point after and the lead extended to 21-0. On defense, pash rush specialist Malory Decredico recorded a sack and DeMent sniffed out a reverse for a tackle for a loss to force a punt. Right before the half the Dons had a great trick play. Beuchotte pitched to Coyne on a reverse. Coyne rolled to her right and hit Tamayo for a big 25 yard gain but the clock ran out on the half.
Prime Time Natal started the second half by making a prime time play. Natal jumped a short route by the Matadors receiver, intercepted the pass and raced 20 yards into the endzone for the pick 6. Beuchotte ran in the point after and the lead grew to 28-0. Late in the game the Dons would again turn to the legs of the freshman Kemp and fellow running back Noelle Dobies. With nifty runs by both the Dons were able to run out the clock and secure the win. The Matadors scored a meaningless touchdown late and the final score was 28-7.
