The past two days were spent determining who would represent the DAL-Foothills league at the North Coast Section (NCS) Championships next Friday and Saturday. This tournament brings only Acalanes, Campolindo, Miramonte and Northgate players together, but this isn’t really a school against school competition. It’s more to be sure we send our top DAL singles and doubles players to the season-ending NCS event.
The tournament kicked off Wednesday with 26 singles players and 14 doubles teams. There were a lot of great matches on the way to the finals. In the end, it was #1 seeded Sze Ting Chen of Acalanes who took the singles title with a 6-0, 6-3 win over #3 seeded Linus Wirstrom – Campolindo. In the tournament, Sze Ting put together four very one-sided victories, only giving up a total of seven games. His match win streak is now at 14 and he looks more than ready for next Friday. #3 senior Wirstrom upset #2 junior Lele of Northgate in the semifinals and pushed Chen in the second set of the final match. His game has improved tremendously over the past few years.
Our Acalanes sophomores #4 seeded Sze You Chen and Bora Hoeberechts played solid tennis today. They ran into a buzz saw in the #1 seeds Agarwal/Richtenburg, but the match was well-contested with a lot of great points. They were up 5-4 in the first set before the Miramonte duo took charge, winning the first set 7-5 and then the second 6-3. This set up an all-Miramonte final as #2 seeded Riley Byrne and Michael Conway defeated #3 seeded Dimitri Bazulin and Elias Mojadidi of Northgate in straight sets. In the end, the #2 seeds overcame a first set loss in a close tiebreaker to get the win 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-7. And we have our DAL representatives for the NCS Championships.
Because Miramonte is a division one school and Acalanes division two, we take separate paths next week. Our DAL doubles champions Byrne/Conway will compete at San Ramon Valley High School while Chen will be at Marin Tennis Club May 8-9. I think I can speak on behalf of the DAL-Foothill coaches that we wish all three of them the best of luck. They earned this opportunity.
The boys can’t breathe easily yet as next week we start preparing for the NCS Team Championship the week of May 11. In that event, because Acalanes is still sitting at #19 in the UTR power ten rankings (which is the sum of the UTR ratings of each team’s top 10 players), we will be competing with the division one teams in a 4/3 format – four singles/three doubles.

The next article will be after the NCS singles/doubles championship next Saturday. Congratulations Sze Ting, Sze You Chen and Bora Hoeberechts – you’ve made this Acalanes coach extremely proud. Go Dons. Coach Rick
