Frosh Girls Soccer Battle Against Berkeley

Last Saturday’s Frosh girls soccer game turned out to be the game of the year and it all started by acknowledging that the opponent, Berkeley High, was known for dominating games with high level play. They had previously beaten teams handily that had been tough matches for the Dons. But this team is not called the Frosh and the Furious for nothing. They came out with a chip on their shoulders and played some of the toughest soccer we’ve seen all year. Every 50/50 ball was met with force, and from the looks of it, Berkeley High was shocked. A quiet sideline and fanbase didn’t know what to think. And the Furious added an exclamation point when Allie Schofield buried a goal with a great shot to put the Dons up 1-0.

These ladies didn’t blink. In their eyes the score was again 0-0. The kept up the pace, toughness, resilience, and determination right through the 2nd half. But Berkeley High had other plans. They started taking a barrage of shots on goal, and this is where the star of the show came to light. Goalkeeper Alexa Bantique had so many incredible saves that most of us couldn’t understand what we were witnessing. Diving saves, blocks over the post, you name it. But Alexa saved the best for last. On an inadvertent hand ball, a penalty kick was awarded. On whistle a shot was ripped to the left side of goal, and Alexa dove and blocked a PK, which as we know, rarely happens. A follow up shot was again taken, and once again blocked. This was one of the best games I’ve witnessed from a goalkeeper. Alexa, find the video of this game and keep it. You may need it someday.

Berkeley High managed to sneak in a goal as time expired, literally. (overtime by my watch) And the game ended in a tie. But the way I see it this was a win, no doubt about it. They outplayed their opponent and sent a message. Don’t overlook The Frosh and the Furious. They are for real.

Miramonte Game

A lackluster start at Miramontes was all but expected. The Dons had just played one of the most exciting and exhausting games all year against Berkeley High. And it took a while to get things going. But don’t tell the likes of Delphine Fisher and Allie Schofield that. These ladies came out to play. Allie acted like every single play on ball would be her last, and she was setting the tone. And it worked. 3 goals were netted by Acalanes. One was booped in with a gentle header by June Natal at the end of the first half. And two beautiful goals by Allie Schofield and Ruby Coy in the second. And the Don’s, after some tremendous defense including multiple slide tackles by Courtney Hamill, managed to take home a 3-0 win over Miramonte. They followed up this grueling day of soccer by a well deserving end of season party.

This Saturday is the last match for these girls, and we know they’ll finish Fast and Furious.
