DON’T BLINK: THE FROSH AND THE FURIOUS GIRLS SOCCER BLASTS THE MATS, 6-1

Svea Staino (14), Allie Schofield (10), and June Natal (23) helped power the Dons’ offense on Saturday.

If you enjoy high-flying offense and shut-down defense, look no further than this year’s Frosh and the Furious squad. They score frequently. And they score fast. That was the story again on a bright and sunny Saturday morning, as the Dons faced off against the Mats of Miramonte.

While this sports reporter’s coffee was still too hot to handle, Svea Staino and June Natal combined on a clever give-and-go that was finished by Svea. Just like that, the Dons were off and running. The second goal was more of the same, literally—June to Svea—and it was already two-nil Acalanes.

A wholesale substitution gave Coach Bonfanti the opportunity to check in with another of his soon-to-be-classic Coach Peter-isms: “Everybody come off whose name is not a palindrome,” he said, referring to Hannah (Hoover).

While the offense continued to challenge the Mats’ defense, our own D was anchored by Alexa Wall, Courtney Hamill, and Talia Tichenor. Other notable highlights include a blast from Shelley Khan from another galaxy that unfortunately didn’t find the back of the net, as well as great hustle plays from Delphine Fisher.

June Natal started the second half with a beautiful goal, followed in quick succession with a corner kick from Ruby Coy that found daylight. Another goal from June, and before you could blink it was 5-0. Hannah Hoover replaced Piper Anderson in goal as the two sought a combined shutout.

With a nifty move to beat the keeper at close range, Svea scored again to make it 6-0 Acalanes. Miramonte, however, played hard to the very end. A PK gave the Mats their lone goal late in the match, denying the Dons a clean sheet but not their confidence.

There were plenty more highlights to follow in the evening game.

With two goals and two assists, June Natal (23) was unstoppable on the pitch—and above it.
Wing Allie Schofield (10) splits the defense on her way to a shot on goal.
Alexa Wall (24), Courtney Hamill (7), Avila Payne (12), and Piper Anderson (22) anchored a tough defense that allowed few shots and zero goals—the lone Mats goal coming on a PK.
