The Varsity Softball team traveled to Concord last Thursday and won big with a 19-7 victory to improve their record to 12-4 and go to 4-1 in league play. The Dons are now on a five game winning streak and undefeated in April as we head into the last 6 games of the regular season.
The Dons got things going early as the first 6 batters all reached base. Emme Young got things going with a beautiful triple down the left field line, which was followed by a single by Lauren Foster to score Young. Esa Orman was hit by a pitch and then Santana Tamayo doubled on a fly ball to center field to score another run. Maya Shoenhair then singled up the middle to bring in another run, before Ella Greenfield doubled on a fly ball to the gap to score Tamayo and Lulu Levy to make it 5-0 in the the first inning.
In the bottom half of the first, Concord was able to get a runner over to third with only one out. However, Riley Zirkel made a great running catch on a line drive and then the Dons were able to double off a runner who failed to tag for a double play to end the inning.
Four more runs crossed the plate in the second inning to extend the lead to 9-0. After Young and Foster got on base again to lead off the inning, Orman hit a towering 3 run home run to left center field that clanged off the scoreboard.
The Dons continued to add to their lead and extended it in the fifth inning to 14-1 highlighted by Tamayo solo home run over the left field wall and an RBI double from Gabby Huerta. After Tamayo’s lead off homer, Shoenhair singled to right and Vanessa Choi crushed a fastball to left field for a line drive single to set up Huerta who doubled on a long fly ball to left and Zirkel followed up with a double of her own.
Lana Cerejo came in to pitch four innings in relief for the Dons, striking out two and walking none, after Shoenhair started in the circle to pitch the first two innings.
In total the Dons accumulated 16 hits in the game. Shoenhair, Young, Huerta, Foster and Tamayo each collected multiple hits for the Dons. Levy paced the Dons with three walks and overall the team had patience at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game. Young stole two bases to lead the team.
The Dons welcome Monte Vista on Monday at home, first pitch 4:30.
