Varsity Girls Lacrosse Defeat Justin-Siena 11-5 in a Rain-Free Affair

Yes, you read the title correctly, it did not rain Tuesday night as the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team hosted Justin-Siena.  Granted it was still cold enough to tempt some fans to go watch the Varsity Boys Volleyball game going on at the same time inside the warm and cozy big gym, but nevertheless the Lacrosse fans faithfully stuck it out and watched the team cruise to a 11-5 victory courtesy of a well-balanced, full team effort with 8 different girls scoring goals and multiple girls getting assists, draw controls, and loose balls.

Perhaps proving her clairvoyance, team co-captain Avery Ives got the team fired up pre-game and declared they they weren’t going to lose. Taking the cue from their captain, the defense, anchored by Avery Ives, Claire Zimmerman, Reese Tierney, and Elsa Braunstein, continued to play stout defense by only allowing 11 shots are target for the evening. Claire and Avery also had some nice runs downfield, Reese drew a charge, and Avery had a few good steals. Addie Martin continued her solid play in goal, including a foot save and some other spectacular plays on penalty shots and other contested shots.

On offense, the Dons got on the board early in the first half on an assist from Catalina Liu to Ella Thomason for the first goal of the game. Other goals in the quarter included a penalty shot from Grace Imrie, another pass from Catalina Liu to Ella Thomason for a goal, an unassisted goal by Catalina Liu, a goal by Campbell Evans on an assist from Grace Imrie, and finally another unassisted goal by Campbell Evans that gave the Dons a 6-2 advantage at halftime. Although there was no official halftime show, the unofficial halftime show was a kid driving an electric bike through the field between the stadium and baseball/softball fields.

In the second half, the Dons got on the board first on an assist from Grace Colaco to Emily Roberts who scored and put the Dons up 7-2. Following that score, goalie Addie Martin passed the ball to defender Reese Tierney who ran coast to coast and scored her first goal of the season. Lucca DeBiasse scored the next two goals, one on a scoop shot that looked more like a 5-iron in golf, and the other on a bounce shot. Jenna Steele scored the last goal of the game for the Dons that put them up 11-3. Justin-Siena scored the last couple goals of the game in garbage time. Final score…Dons win 11-5!!
