VARSITY BOYS SOCCER CLAW BACK AT COUGARS TO EARN 2-2 TIE

The Dons traveled to Moraga on Thursday night to take on the Campolindo Cougars.  As usual, the match against our cross-town rival was filled with drama and high-energy play. The referee was very busy calling fouls and handing out yellow cards like candy on Halloween. Campo got on the scoreboard early in the match as they looped a kick just under the crossbar. The teams battled back and forth the rest of the half but neither team could muster a score.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead about nine minutes into the second half when their forward dropped a ball into the far end of the net from the right side.  Down two goals with just over 30 minutes left, the Dons chances looked slim but they immediately charged back with a goal only a few minutes later.  Niko White made another relentless attack down the middle of the Camp defense but was taken down just outside the penalty box. Senior Colin Sohn stepped up to shape a shot over the Campo wall and into the upper left corner of the goal.  The team and Acalanes crowd were fired up at the quick response and the Dons kept the pressure on. Just five minutes later, senior forward Lucas Dissman outraced the Campo goalie to a loose ball and knocked in the game-tying goal! The crowd was hoping for a miraculous come-from-behind win when Jonny Roth had a chance off a long free kick with only 5 minutes left but his shot just missed and the match ended in an unsatisfying 2-2 draw, but the grit the Dons exhibited in coming back from a 2-0 second-half deficit was impressive.  Sohn was named “Man of the Match” for his fine goal and usual all-around great play in the midfield.

Next up for the Dons are two home matches this week vs. Miramonte (Tuesday 715pm) and Ygnacio Valley (Thursday 700pm).   Come out to support your Dons as they barrel towards the final two weeks before NCS playoffs begin.
