The Acalanes Frosh/Soph team is on a 5-game win streak, with a 3-2 victory over Clayton Valley on a surprisingly sunny Saturday afternoon. The Dons controlled the game from the start with slick passing and lots of 1-2’s. Any early chances for the Ugly Eagles were shut down by keeper Lily Cervenka (#1) and solid play out the back from central defenders Natalie Hamill (#21) and Cassidy Smith (#8). Most of the action happened in the Eagles half with a few well-placed shots from winger Hannah Hoover (#9) and central midfielder Caroline Tumility (#15) that were just saved by the opposing keeper. At last, central midfielder Kendall Lee (#10) scored the first goal from a corner and a scramble in the box, making it 1-0 at half-time.
The Dons continued to dominate possession and chances in the second half with the defense shutting down a very dangerous looking left winger on the home team. After a string of great passing, attacking-midfielder Riley Zirkel (#20) scored a right-footed curling effort into the far corner. The other team finally scored from a very well-taken free kick and then again shortly thereafter making it 2-2 and very tense. The Don’s were not to be defeated with winger Madison Bernstein (#23) creating lots of opportunities and taking a very nice left-footed shot that was saved by the keeper. Then another corner led to another scramble in the box with central midfielder Kendall Lee (#10) and striker Aliyah Vazquez-Fireman (#17) being in the right position to help score the winning goal and close out the game 3-2.
