Welcome to the 2023-24 JV Girls Soccer Season! Last year’s team started strong with a 4-0 record and continued the momentum throughout the season, ending with 13 wins, 4 losses, and 4 ties. Most notably, the team was a remarkable 5-1 against rivals Campolindo, Miramonte, and Las Lomas, with the only loss a tight 2-1 defeat to Las Lomas in the penultimate game of the season.
Looking to build on last year’s success, the team travelled to Oakland on Monday to take on the Bishop O’ Dowd Dragons on their recently redone turf field. Although the girls were unable to slay the Dragons, they performed well, punctuated by two goals from returning player Danica Green. Danica’s first goal was a shot outside the 18 yard box on a lay off from Freshman Grace Eppinger. Her second goal was an “Olympic” goal from a corner kick (For those of you like myself that don’t know all the terminology, an Olympic goal, also called an “Olimpico,” is a goal scored directly off of a corner kick without contact by another player, named after Cesareo Onzari’s corner kick for the reigning Olympic champion Argentina in a 1924 friendly against Uruguay.)
Head coach Alex Avelar has a number of goals for this season. He wants the team to build on last year’s success, win the rivalry games, win the JV tournament after placing 2nd last year, and his main goal is to get the girls ready to play Varsity.
Lastly, as the Technology lead for Boosters, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask everyone to (1) sign up to receive the daily emails for Acalanes Sports (click here), (2) visit the Girls Soccer page on the Boosters website that has story recaps, rosters, and schedules (click here), (3) use TeamSnap for all the normal reasons and to share good game pictures, and (4) visit the Acalanes Stadium YouTube channel (click here) to watch the home game livestreams if you or other family members/friends are unable to attend in person. Go Dons!
The team’s next game is on Wednesday, November 29 at 4:30 against Alameda High School at Thompson Field in Alameda
