As I sat down to write this article, I was thinking that I was running out of content having talked about the history of tennis, scoring, the US Open, rackets, balls, and so forth. Although I came up with a few other ideas that could show up in future articles, I thought I would dedicate this one to female athletes for a number of reasons. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Acalanes girls volleyball team recently had a record fan turnout as they hosted rival Campo, Boosters began selling special edition pink Acalanes hats with a portion of proceeds going to the Acalanes Female Athletic Board, and Friday is the All Female Sports Pasta Feed at the Acalanes Cafeteria. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that the tennis girls recently had a fundraiser where they sold raffle tickets at Diablo Foods, and a few generous patrons donated for no other reason than they wanted to support female athletics at Acalanes.
Against that backdrop, the Varsity Girls Tennis team traveled to College Park on Tuesday where they were able to pull out the victory 6-3. Lilou Picard played singles for the first time at Line 6 and was able to beat a tough opponent 6-4, 6-4. In addition, Aamena Shipchandler won Line 1, Grace Colaco won Line 2, and Sienna Moise won Line 4.
There were a number of changes to the Dons doubles lineup as Anna MacLeod and Jadith LaBonge played Line 1, Lauren Foster and Ridhi Patel moved up to Line 2, and Liv Heglie and Emily Jones played Line 3. Anna and Jadith won. Liv and Emily, who were named players of the match, also won in exciting fashion as they came back to win the 3rd set tiebreaker after dropping the second set 7-5 in a marathon 2 hour match.
Please come support the team as the take on Campo at home on Thursday, October 5 at 4pm
