Varsity Girls Kick off Great Tennis Weekend

On Friday, the Girls Varsity Tennis team travelled to Union City for a 12 team tournament at James Logan High School.  The team had a challenging match in the morning against San Ramon Valley, who appeared to be the strongest team in the field, but bounced back in the afternoon against Berkeley.  Olivia Dawkins, Lauren Foster, Hanna Wisnewski, and Liv Heglie all won tough matches in the #1 and #3 doubles lines.  Aamena Shipchandler won line one singles in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-4, against a difficult opponent.  The Dons gave a strong performance, but were edged out of the win with a score of 4-3. The coaches were proud of how the team played in what was a pretty competitive tournament as the girls really dug down deep.

On Saturday, the US Open Women’s Championship featured the animated character from the hit 2017 Disney/Pixar movie that explored the traditions of the Day of the Dead, oh wait, wrong Coco.  It featured American Coco Gauff against soon to be #1 in the world, Russian Aryna Sabalenka.  The American pulled out the victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a three set thriller that felt less like the movie Coco and more like the 1985 classic Rocky IV where underdog American Rocky Balboa defeated Russian Ivan Drago. And then on Sunday, Novak Djokovic won his record 24th major title in the men’s final against another Russian, Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Truly a great weekend of tennis!

Please come out and root for the girls as they open league play on Tuesday (9/12) at 4pm at home against College Park
