Boys Basketball, Las Lomas, Split Season Series

On Saturday the Dons headed to Las Lomas to take on the Knights. Justin Zegarowski suffered a foot injury against Clayton Valley so Colin Norstad got the start for the Dons. Colin immediately got into the action feeding Jack Bayless for a layup to open the scoring. LL came back with a 3 in their first trip to jump on top. Zubin Acuna hit a baseline jumper and the Dons strung together a couple of stops to extend a lead as Colin hit a big 3 from the corner and the forced a jump ball at the other end. Colin drove baseline next trip and the play led to a tip in for Jake Davis. Colin’s further efforts were rewarded with a trip to the line for FT, Jake got another putback and then a fast break layup for a 14 -8 Dons lead after Q1.

Jake opened the Q2 scoring with a basket inside but the game became a defensive battle after that for a few minutes. Las Lomas took advantage of way too many Dons turnovers to seize a 21-16 lead halfway through the quarter. Jack stopped the bleeding with a baseline drive to cut the LL lead to 3, but another Dons turnover and a LL 3 made it a 6 point game. Theo Stoll came back with a 3 of his own and then Jake added another putback to cut it back to a 1 point lead for the Knights. The Dons started to figure out the press, with Ian Salmon hitting Jack for a layup and the and 1 to tie it up at 26, and Zubin hit a 3 next trip to give the Dons the lead once again. The Knights used a few more good stops to take a 31-29 lead, but late in the quarter a nice hustle offensive rebound from Colin led to a basket for Jake and a tie game 31-31 at the half.

Jake started Q3 with another bucket inside, and then Zubin snuck inside for a layup. Jack then added 2 on a give and go with Jake. Despite the nice collective inside game, LL remained hot from outside and extended their lead. Jake and Zubin continued to work well together with Jake getting 2 FT and 2 more post baskets on Zubin assists in the quarter, and Ian added a nice runner off the glass.

The Knights had a strong 4th quarter and put the game out of reach early in the period. The Dons continued to battle with Colin adding to his total with another layup, Jordan Brown hitting a 3 and Nate Bennett had some quality minutes and added 4 points for the Dons. Jake ended with 20, Zubin had 12, Jack had 9 and Colin dropped 6 after getting the start.
