This past Thursday, 1/12, the JV Girls had a well deserved break from the rain and traveled to Clayton Valley High School to take on the Ugly Eagles (yes, that really is their mascot). From the start, we knew this might be tight competition, given CV had almost as many wins as the Dons going into this game. Just before the 8-minute mark, Clayton Valley scored on a penalty kick that unfortunately flew way above our keeper’s reach. Our Dons responded with tough play throughout the rest of the first half. We saw multiple shots on goal from Zoya Acuna, Sisi Houston, crisp passes and feeds by Elodie Jensen and Reiney Fish, great hustle from Lily Polkinhorn and Maya Shinaman moving the ball down the pitch, and solid defense by Sofia Cerruti, Katelyn Weiss, & Edie Berzansky.
Acalanes started the second half by continuing to dominate possession. More great crosses by Dani Green, and several shots on goal by Livi Foster, Zoya, and Dani. Acalanes scored when Sisi sent a beautiful corner kick, with goal completed by sister Dani! More solid defense by Elodie, Lily, Alana Brinkman & Mollie Schofield. Just as impressive as our first goal, after a foul called on the Ugly Eagles, Sofia Cerruti shot a lofty free kick to Reiney Fish who headed it beautifully, just missing the left corner of the goal. In the end, the Dons and the Ugly Eagles tied it up at 1:1. Huge thanks, once again, to keepers Sophie Gold and Sara Tarnai for so many saves.
You can find the Dons back in action at home on Tuesday, January 17th vs Windsor – 5pm for JV and 7pm for Varsity.
