Frosh girls soccer team defeated Miramonte for the second week in a row with a 2-0 victory on Saturday morning. The sun was out and one of the first games of the season without rain. The first goal came in the first half by #8 Nina Bundy who had a shot from the top of the box that floated right up and over the goalie’s head. Acalanes goalie Sara Tarnai (#23) had two incredible saves and we ended the first half 1-0 in favor of the Dons.
Acalanes completely dominated the second half possessing the ball for the majority of the game with many shots on goal, including scoring opportunities by Maddie Bernstein (#13), Charlotte Gellman (#22), Stella Pacheco (#3) and Katherine Avnaim (#7). But it was Nina Bundy’s (#8) day, with the second goal of the day coming from her off a rebound from a shot made by Kate Uffelman (#10) late in the second half, sending the Dons home with a 2-0 victory.
Later that afternoon, our Dons hosted Northgate at 2:00 for the final game before winter break while riding a 3 game winning streak.
Both teams came out strong and aggressive as Northgate looked early on to be one of our toughest opponents. Unfortunately for the Dons, we sacrificed 2 early goals to fall behind 2-0 in the first 15 minutes. But our Dons did not give up or become discouraged, instead the team bounced back with great effort and support for each other.
The rest of the first half was dominated by the Dons controlling the ball and putting a lot of pressure on their opponent. There were many chances generated by our midfielders #3 Stella Pacheco, #9 Sadie Hendrickson, #8 Nina Bundy, #19 Brooke Rardin, #11 Julia Munter, and #18 Julia Lyons with the forwards #22 Charlotte Gellman and #10 Kate Uffelman getting several shot attempts with a few hitting the post. Finally late in the half, Gellman broke through on a nice pass from Lyons to score to bring the score 2-1 at the half.
The second half was intensely contested with stellar play from the backs #21 Natalie Hamill, #15 Cassidy Smith, #5 Lauren Anderson, #19 Molly Alrich, and #23 Sara Tarnai with #14 Maya Shoenhair in goal, shutting down the Broncos the entire half. Meanwhile, our offensive effort picked up where it left off in the first half with consistent movement and getting several opportunities to score.
Despite the outstanding effort, the score remained the same with the Dons falling 2-1. Looking forward to Saturday, February 4th for what will be an outstanding rematch.
Go Dons!
