Dons Debut League volleyball battle in Benicia: Acalanes punishes the Panthers x 3, Frosh, JV, & Varsity!

Tuesday afternoon, 9/20, All 3 Dons volleyball teams pummeled the Benecia Panthers on their home turf!

Frosh:

With a call of “All right my dudes!” from Coach Roman, the Freshman lady Dons hit the court at Benicia High.  Despite looking a little bit off initially, with the Panthers going toe-for-toe for the first four points, they pulled it together and steamed ahead to a definitive win in the first set of 25 to 14.  Benicia’s was undeterred though, with the second game once again starting out with tit-for-tat scoring through point 4.  But Acalanes once again roared ahead, with another 25 to 14 win and a final match score of 2-0.

Junior Varsity

Dons JV came out “on fire” and quickly posted a 7-0 lead to Benecia.  The momentum continued and they dominated 25 to 9.  Benicia turned up the heat in the second set and battled with 1- 2 point spreads. The Panthers ultimately lost steam and the Dons pulled ahead, winning 25 to 19.

Varsity

Maybe it was the pressure to match the show put on by their younger class Dons that got our Varsity ladies off to a slow start in the first set? Despite warming up well in the second half, highlighted by Lyanne Wang’s deep digs on defense, Selenbacher’s ace & extended run on serve, & kills by Jones, Paul, Olin, Walton, & Hageboeck, Acalanes lost to the jungle cats 25 -19.

Fortunately, our Varsity ladies began & finished the second set with all hands on deck to defeat Benicia 25 – 13. Shout out to Olin, Jones, Foster, & Dikova for kills & blocks, Korzeniowska for consistent sets, Bocobo for great defense, and to Profilio for a half-dozen service run!

Set 3 was a bit closer, but thanks to impressive digs on defense by Profilio, Wang, & Winkles, blocks & kills at the net by Walton, Mason, Hageboeck, & Paul, & another impressive run on serve by Profilio, the Panthers succumbed to the Dons 25 – 19, with the final point an “Applesauce” Walton kill.

Set 4 became a real nail biter when the Dons found themselves all of a sudden sitting at 21 – 12 Panthers! MaeLin Mason responded with a run on serve, including 3 aces, followed by kills by Hageboeck, Dikova, Olin, & Walton to narrow the gap to an “edge of our seat” 23 – 20. Hanna finished off set 4 with a blistering service run, with the final kill again by Walton, pounding the Panthers 26 – 24, for a final score of 3 sets to 1.
