Varsity Volleyball at Northgate: Dons vs. Broncos!
This past Tuesday evening, 9/27, Acalanes met the Broncos on their home court at Northgate.
The Dons started off strong in the first set, but it became clear right away that the Broncos were ready for a fight!
Thanks to reliable sets by Korzeniowska and Seelenbacher, Hageboeck & Olin led in kills, with help at the net from Mason, Walton, & Jones. Dons defense on as always, with great ups by Profilio, Wang, & Winkles—even a bonus header over the net by Profilio! Runs on serve by Mason & Profilio helped keep the score close, but in the end it was the Broncos who took set #1, 25 – 23.
Set #2 was another tit for tat battle with the Broncos. Highlights included solid service by Hageboeck, Mason, Korzeniowska, and Seelenbacher, kills across the front row by Hageboeck, Olin, Mason, Paul, Dikova, Walton & Jones, Try as they might, the Dons just couldn’t catch up to Northgate, with the Broncos taking the second set, 25 – 18.
The Dons started the third set with renewed energy, with juniors Ava Bunton and Mika Bocobo added to the lineup. Acalanes quickly took a commanding lead, thanks to amazing digs & saves by Bocobo, Profilio, Wang, and setter Korzeniowska, multiple aces on serve by Hageboeck & Korzeniowska, and amazing hits by Dikova, Olin, Jones, Hageboeck, and Ava Bunton, who alone racked up 5 kills total for the match! Unfortunately the Broncos responded to our challenge & eventually closed the gap to take the third set and the night, with a score of 26 – 24.
We’ll get ‘em next time when the Broncos come to our home turf!
Hope to see the Dons’ fans SHOW UP for our home game vs Las Lomas Thursday 9/29: Frosh @ 4PM, JV @ 5PM, and Varsity at 6:30 PM.
GO DONS!!
JV Girls Volleyball keep the streak alive against Northgate
It seemed to be a test of wills. It wasn’t easy for our Lady Dons who traveled down the road to Walnut Creek to face the Broncos of Northgate. As we watched Set 1 unfold, we thought maybe this could be an easy night for us. Wow, we were wrong. Addi Ames started it off, smoking a kill. Rena Liu had a huge dive dig to save a point. Piper Coy crushed another kill to increase our lead in the first set. Christina Hageboeck had 4 amazing aces to take the lead to 10-4. Kylah Fox and Addy Treter combined for a great block too. Sophia Terry had a monster kill after a perfect set by Christina. Annie Baker had a sweet kill to keep the momentum going. All this great team play led to a 25-14 first set win.
Our Dons played well in the second set, but the Broncos just played a bit better. Piper had an ace and kill that led to a 10-6 lead. Nisa Khoury also had a strong hit that gave us a point. Christina had a nice save off the net to save a point but strong play by Northgate allowed them to overtake us in the second set 19-25 that would force a 3rd and final set.
Sophia Terry made a nice save from under the net to rescue a point. Campbell Evans also had a nice save. The Dons were scrambling for every point as the 3rd set only goes to 15, so each point is so important. The Dons were down 6-9. It does seem that our girls always rise to the occasion when their backs are against the wall. Addy Treter had a smash kill that seemed to change the direction of the match. At 11-11, it was anyone’s game! With Rena serving out the match, the Lady Dons held strong and took set #3, 15-11, keeping our winning streak alive. Go Dons!
