Archie Williams
Varsity Volleyball: A Near Miss in Marin
This past Wednesday evening, our Acalanes Ladies Varsity Volleyball Team traveled to Marin County to face off against Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo.
From the start of the first set, both teams played at a very competitive level; we were essentially tied with the Falcons the entire game until they pulled away in the end to win 25 – 22.
The second set began similarly to the first…until Hanna Hageboeck responded with a run-on serve to bring the Dons into the lead 10 – 5. The Falcons responded, and, despite kills across the court led by Maylin Mason & Katelyn Olin, the score remained neck & neck until the Falcons won again, with a score of 25 – 22.
After our 2 sets “warmup”, the Dons came out strong for set 3 with a full team effort. The Acalanes pin hitters Hanna Hageboeck, Ryann Jones, and Maya Paul collectively laid down half a dozen kills; Jade Profilio traded off between digging deep on defense to long runs on serve. Middle Katelyn Olin blocked as many as she hit, her final block scoring our 25th point to beat the Falcons 25 -23.
Needless to say, excitement was running high in the stands and on the court going into set 4. It should be said that the Falcons had a very spirited and fairly respectful fan base; proud that our Dons were able to keep cool heads and continue to deliver high level play.
Once again, we saw Hanna Hageboeck, Ryann Jones, and Katelyn Olin lead the Dons on kills; more kills and blocks from oppo Apple Walton and middle Sofie Foster. Jade Profilio had yet another run-on serve to help maintain a wide lead over the Falcons. Setters Mara Korzeniowska & Emma Seelenbacher consistently set our hitters & delivered strong serves throughout the night; the winning ace delivered by Mara Korzeniowska led the comeback Dons to defeat the Falcons 25 – 21.
With the match tied 2-2, the 5th set started off well with the Dons taking the lead. Unfortunately, in the end, Acalanes could not catch the Falcons, who ended the night with a win 15 – 10, overall beating the Dons 3 sets to 2. Congrats to Acalanes on an incredibly well fought battle until the bitter end…we’ll get ’em next time
