Varsity Hoopsters Battle in loss to Alhambra

Aided by some quick points led by Theo Stoll, the Dons opened up the game with a 4-0 lead. Midway through the first period the Dons were holding a lead at 6-5 but it was a grinder. The Dons had open shots that weren’t falling, the defense held strong against Alhambra but by the end of the period the Bulldogs clawed back to take a 10-6 lead.

The second period had some assists by Brady Quinn and Landon Best-Santos and scoring by Stoll and Tate Nelson, but Alhambra was able to make 3’s and layups in transition to extend their lead. Size was an issue with the Bulldogs scoring easy baskets down low. Both teams struggled with turnovers and by the end of the half it was 27-14 in favor of the Bulldogs, leaving the Dons with a uphill challenge for the second half.

Jack Bayless and Stoll had some assist-bucket combos to help spark a slow start to the 3rd period. Justin Zegarowski got into the mix draining a 3 and adding to the offense but the Bulldogs held strong with a 41-27 lead at the end of the period.

In the 4th period the Dons battled back, Zubin Acuna scored a 3 and Zegarowski followed suit and Dons edged back to make it an 8 point game. They were making shots and forcing Alhambra turnovers. Theo Stoll added a couple more 3s on an assists by Bayless and Nelson and Dons gave it a run, but the comeback fell short, ultimately losing 54-48.
