JV Basketball: Dons Show Tenacity in Nail Biter

The JV Dons took on the Las Lomas Knights Wednesday evening at home.  The mission was to stop the Las Lomas shooters.  Our defense was sharp for the most part, but the Knights hit open shots when it counted.  It was by far the most competitive game of the season.  Jack Bayless led all scores with 25 points, followed by Landon Santos, Justin Zegarowski, and Eli Brent.

The first quarter saw the Knights take and keep the lead for the period.  Acalanes highlights included a 3 point field goal and free throw from Landon Santos and in the last 5 minutes Jack Bayless made a driving layup, Bennett Dodge swished a baby hook in the lane and Koleton Fenton made two free throws.  The second quarter opened with Justin Zegarowski hitting a 3 point shot followed by a 3 pointer from Eli Brent.   Jack Bayless hit two critical free throws to end the half 24-30 with Las Lomas in the lead.

The third quarter was worth the price of admission.  Acalanes came out of the locker room looking determined  to stop the Knights. Jack Bayless took over the game on offense with several driving layups cutting through the lane and finishing fast break opportunities.  The game was tied with 4:36 to go in the quarter.  Bayless then pulled up for a jumper to give the Dons the lead 32-30.  Shortly after Santos banked home a 10 footer from the right side and Zegarowski hit a 3 pointer for a 37-36 lead.  Bayless made one of two free throws to end the quarter with the Dons up 38-36.

The 4th quarter did not disappoint. Bayless opened up the scoring with two quick fast break layups through traffic with crisp passing to get the ball down the floor ahead of the Knight defense. Dons extend the lead 42-38. However, over the next two minutes the Knights were not done and once again took the lead.   With one more push Bayless beat his man and hit a pull up jumper to reduce the Knights lead to one!  With time expiring Coco Gannon was fouled and was in the act of shooting earning him a trip to the free throw line.  Coco made one of two free throws tying the game.at 45-45 and that’s the way it ended.  The Dons face the Knights in the last game of the season to settle the score.
