Lady Dons Take Down Heritage – Extend Win Streak to 58

The Lady Dons had their second game in two days and this time they made the trip east, down Highway 4, to play Heritage High School in Brentwood. Heritage has a relatively new Women’s program but based on the size of their JV and Varsity squads, the excellent facilities and the enthusiastic efforts in the pool, it will not be long before they are a force to be reckoned with.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Dons get on the scoreboard as Carol Schirmer drew a 5 meter penalty shot which Claire Rowell converted in the first few seconds. However, if the Dons expected this to be an easy game, they were soon put right as Heritage hit back quickly to level the score. The game went back and forth but the Dons showed themselves to be the stronger team as they pushed out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter with goals from Claire Rowell (assisted by Emma Miller), Rowell again after a fast counter, Heidi Heffelfinger (assisted by Alex Mould) and Carol Schirmer.

The Lady Dons continued to have the better of the game and had built up a lead of 9-4 by the end of the half with goals coming from Heffelfinger (assist Miller), McCartney (assist Heffelfinger) and two goals from sophomore Maizie O’Hare (assisted by McCartney and Heffelfinger). The third quarter continued in the same vein with the Lady Dons rotating their team to give game time to the whole squad. It was 12-6 at the end of the third quarter with two goals coming from Schirmer (the first assisted by Mould) and one from O’Hare. The fourth quarter continued the pattern with Schirmer scoring her fourth (assisted by Mould) and Alexa Carter scoring the last Dons goal (assisted by McCartney). The final score was 14-8 to Acalanes. The final statistics showed Carol Schirmer had four goals, Claire Rowell and Maizie O’Hare three each, with two for Heidi Heffelfinger and one each for Alexa Carter and Alana McCartney. Alex Mould had four assists with two each for Emma Miller, Heffelfinger and McCartney. Miller had three steals with two each for Mould, Rowell and Donleavy and one for McCartney and Potter. Ava Donleavy made 11 saves. The Lady Dons first home game of the season is on Saturday at 11.20am.
