Acalanes 65  Clayton Valley 56

The girls opened league play at home versus the team most think will be the toughest league opponent this season, Clayton Valley.  After trailing the majority of the first half and going into halftime down 3, the Lady Dons exploded in the 3rd quarter.  It was the girls’ best quarter of the season, as they outscored the visiting Ugly Eagles 28 to 8 and extended the lead to 17 entering the 4th.  Clayton Valley did push our girls in the fourth and cut it to 5, but the Lady Dons were not to be denied as they held on for a comfortable 9 point win.  Grace Gebharbt recorded a double-double with 21 points and 16 rebounds.  Lauren Kobasigawa added 15 points, Lauren Frechman scored 12 with 4 assists, and Kaylee Pond had 11 rebounds and 7 assists in her first game back from injury.  It won’t show up in the box score, however, Gabby Schneider played a key role guarding Clayton’s top post and keeping her off the offense boards all 2nd half.  The girls face Northgate at home Tuesday.
