Girls Varsity Soccer Settles for a Tie

The Girls Varsity soccer team visited Miramonte on Thursday night to face last year’s State Champions in a highly anticipated match. The weather cooperated with no rain. The Dons came out fired up and played extremely well, connecting passes and taking shots on goal. Within the first 7 minutes of the game, Tatum Zuber took a “moon shot” from 35 yards out to put the ball in the net! Incredible goal! Dons take the lead early 1-0.

At around the 15-minute mark, Gabby Ortale made a perfect pass to Emily Keeler on the right side for a clear breakaway, only to get fouled in the penalty box. Junior Aliye Wingate, back for her first game this season, took the penalty kick by calmly pounding the ball into the right side of the net to give the Dons a 2-0 lead, where the score remained for the rest of the half.

In the second half, the Mats came out with a lot of intensity, taking several hard shots on goal within the first few minutes. The Dons just wanted to hold onto the lead. D1 commit, Jordan Goularte for the Mats, took matters into her own hands and proceeded to score two goals within 10 minutes of each other to tie the game 2-2. The Dons kept fighting, only to come up short to get that winning goal.

A gut-punch for this team as it felt like a loss. They are still finding their identity and will continue to improve. Excellent play by Dylan Hagglund in the back, as well as Aliye Wingate. Tatum Zuber and Emily Keeler also played tough.

The Dons will travel to Alameda High School on Saturday at 1pm.

Go DONS!
