Dons and Dogs Go At It Again

YOUR Acalanes Dons girls volleyball team rolled into Martinez seeking to avenge their earlier home loss to the Alhambra Bulldogs, hoping to make it three league wins in a row. Recap with Vocab below.

First Set:

2-0: Dons lead early as Aly Kirke stuffs an overpass (“Yummy”) and delivers a block (“Roof”).

4-1: Annika Olson fires a winning serve (“Ace”).

7-3: Erin Meade’s turn for a Roof.

8-3: Sydney Sowarby gets her Ace on. Timeout ‘Dogs.

10-6: Nice Sowarby dig and Lane Webster sets Makenzie Sauer for a hit that scores (“Kill”).

12-6: Kennedy Cornish terminates a long rally via a kill in the middle on a fast set (“1”).

15-9. Sauer pass of a Bulldog kill attempt (“Dig”) allows Olson to take another swing at it, and her second hit yields a kill.

18-10: Rocket serve from Olson and the Alhambra pass flies back over the net (“Overpass”)… and Kirke takes care of it with alacrity.

22-12: Meade delivers a sharp sideways kill (“Angle”) and then follows it up with her own Ace.

24-12: Another hot potato serve from Meade…Overpass…Webster jumps and flushes it straight down for a score (“Stuff”).

25-12: Dons take the first with authority.

Second Set:

1-0: Madi Risch steps into one with some mustard. Kill.

6-2: Sowarby Ace.

9-2: Sweet dig Webster. Sweet dig Risch. Bulldogs spray it wide and call a timeout as the Dons are dominating the ‘Dogs.

10-2. Big Cornish BLOCK. I think I just felt an earthquake. No really. Did anybody feel that?

13-2: Sowarby Ace goes clean to the floor untouched, then she deals a pair of Aces (“Bullets”). Another Ace! (“Trips”). Wow Syd!

18-6: Webster fires an early ball hit off the initial pass (“2 ball”) into a gap for a winner.

19-7: Daisy Sibley perfect pass (“Dime”) to Webster, who uses it to tee up Risch for a laser beam kill. Textbook offense. Schooling the Pups.

21-7: Webster Ace!

22-11: ‘Dogs bite back, but Meade stops the attack with a kill off the blockers (“Tool”).

23-11: Risch Ace. Aces all over the yard.

25-12: Dons duplicate the score from the first set.

Third Set:

2-0:  Risch chases a ball down near the Dons bench, well off the court, to keep it alive. Dons score. Super hustle!

4-2: Risch. Ace. Yass.

5-2. Risch. Ace. Woo!

7-6: Big Dog Rally. Elena Needs finishes the point with a kill after a long rally featuring multiple digs from both Needs and Risch.

9-7: Amazing diving pass (“Up”) from Kaylin Hiatt keeps the ball alive, and then Needs tools it off the blockers (“OTB”).

11-8. One-armed pop-up save from Hiatt. Webster smokes it for a kill.

16-11: Olivia Elliott gets up high and blocks one.

17-11: Risch Rocket Ace. Great serve.

21-15: Multiple Risch passes. Cornish kill. Dons closing in on this win.

23-16: Sauer Ace. Gettin’ in on the action. How many Aces tonight!!! Coach Alan says 16!

24-20: Risch Thunder Bomb stops a 4-point Bulldogs rally. Match point!

25-21: Dons prevail in the 3rd set and in the match! Revenge is sweet.

Dons roll Alhambra with probably their best all-around effort of the season so far. Fun to watch!
