Dons JV Volleyball Finishes Strong Season

The Dons took on Northgate at home for their final match of the season, coming off a trip to the semi-finals of the East County Tournament. They were still without injured setter Sarah Coons leaving Aisha Mohanty with all the setting duties. Aisha distributed well early with Tate Huisingh and Aly Kirke recording early kills and Makenzie Sauer getting some nice swings from the back row. Good serving from Tate and DS Daisy Sibley pushed the Dons to a 10-4 lead, as libero Sydney Sowarby made a great dig on a tip that the Broncos couldn’t handle, recording a rare dig/kill combo platter.  Northgate made a push to lead 16-19 but a nice rally with 2 digs from Daisy and a hard Kylie Wood kill gave the Dons some momentum to tie 19-19. Northgate added 3 to make it 19-22, but the Dons got it back and with 3 nice Makenzie serves and an Emma Johnson kill the Dons took a 23-22 lead. After a service exchange, Lyla Cox got a kill for the lead, and a bit later an Emma pipe kill gave the Dons the comeback win 27-25. Following the dramatic set 1 win, local superfan Dan Meade observed “This looks like a team that expects to win.”

Set 2 started with 2 Lauren Davis kills early, a sweet tip from Aly, and 2 nice angle kills from Emma. A great run of serves from Daisy gave the Dons another 10-4 lead, and the Dons pushed it to 15-7 with Maren Takeuchi in to serve. Makenzie pounded one to the back line, added a kill from the right side and Emma added another kill to make it 18-9 forcing a Bronco timeout. Northgate was unable to gather any momentum late as middle Alara Rose, Emma and Makenzie continued to pepper them with hits and Acalanes went on to win 25-14. The JV team finished a strong season 9-1 in league. Great job Dons!
