On a perfect day for rugby at the legendary Pat Vincent Field at St. Mary’s College, Acalanes High School’s Dons Rugby Club capped off their inaugural season in stunning fashion, defeating powerhouse De La Salle 26-7. The upset victory marked a statement win for the young program, finishing their first campaign with an impressive 6-1 record.
Acalanes set the tone early when co-captain and Back of the Match Thomas Parrott (#10, Junior) sliced through the defense for the opening try and coolly slotted three of four conversions on the day. The Dons’ forwards dominated the set-piece, with Rookie of the Match Will Sliamas (#4, Freshman) controlling the lineout and powering over for a try of his own.
Man of the Match Bethal Imasuen (#8, Senior) was unstoppable in open play, making several storming runs and scoring a statement try that showcased his power and determination. Meanwhile, Forward of the Match Bryce Birdsong (#7, Junior, Co-Captain) led from the front with relentless tackling, keeping De La Salle on the back foot.
With Acalanes leading 19-7 late in the match, Danny Dunne (#12, Sophomore) sealed the victory, carving through the defense for the fourth and final try.
“This was a great first rugby season for the Dons,” said Head Coach Matt Welton. “We’re so excited to officially be part of the league in 2026.”
Acalanes’ future in high school rugby looks bright after a historic win against one of the state’s top programs.
