The JV Girls Water Polo team headed to Campo for a fun weekend of tournament games last Friday and Saturday! Placed in the C group, their first game was against Valley Christian from San Jose on Friday afternoon. The Dons don-inated from start to finish – ending up winning 15-1! Multiple goals from sophomore Santana Tamayo and junior Amayel Guiro, as well as single goals from juniors Jessica Gerhardt, Sadie Hendrickson and Audrey Martin, and frosh Kylie Kaplan.
The win meant the girls had a bit of extra rest time before playing for the top seed in Group C against San Ramon Valley. The second game on Friday afternoon got underway at 5pm. After some early goal trading, Acalanes went on a 4 goal streak, with scores by Santana Tamayo, sophomore Erin Lerch, frosh Lilah Kring and junior Sadie Hendrickson. Goalie Maeve McAlister (frosh) had several key blocks to keep the score in favor of Acalanes!
The second half against SRV saw goals from frosh Lily Teicher, Jess Gerhardt, and two from Santana Tamayo. Audrey Martin had a couple of assists, and Mave McAlister continued her incredible shot blocking on goal to keep the final score 10-6, Acalanes.
In Saturday’s action, the girls – champions of the C group – faced Miramonte, who had also won their group. Unfortunately, Miramonte kept control the whole game, winning 13-2. It would have been much worse without the amazing goaltending by frosh Lucy McShane! The other highlights were an amazing cross-pool shot from our goal to their goal at the half by Lucy, and a late-in-the-game goal from Santana Tamayo.
The final game for third place overall in the tournament took place at 1pm against Carondelet. The game started off with strong play from Amayel Guiro, who had a steal and a goal in quick succession. Erin Lerch followed with a goal of her ow, as well as another Lucy McShane special cross-pool goal to end the first quarter 3-0. The second quarter started with a 5-meter shot for Carondelet that was blocked by Lucy! Santana Tamayo, Amayel Guirl and Lucy McShane followed up with a goal apiece to bring the score to 6-0. Second half highlights were goals by Jess Gerhardt and Santana Tamayo with the final score 8-3. Dons take third place overall in the 2024 Acalanes Invitational! GO DONS!
