Flag Football Finishes Strong Preseason: Big Plays Dominate

University of Alabama won its first 2 preseason games by a combined score of 105-16 against competitors mostly unknown, and from whom they learned very little about themselves and their program.   The Dons, on the other hand, faced some of the stiffest competition in the area in its three preseason games against Alameda, Heritage, and Las Lomas and even had scrimmages against very tough Skyline and Berkeley high schools and Las Lomas.  The Dons performed well in every game and scrimmage and learned a lot, all of which they will bring into their league games beginning September 18.

Though this weekend’s games ended in narrow losses, strong performances and big plays were in abundance on offense and defense.  In game 1 vs. Alameda, Haley Chelemedos intercepted an Alameda pass and raced 60 yards for a touchdown.  In game 2 vs. Heritage, Leila Hamidi connected with Maya Shoenhair for a 66 yard TD on a halfback option pass.  Great runs, receptions, passes and tackles were on display for 96 very hot minutes of game play!

In the preason the Dons have been led by veteran and new players from every grade.  On offense, junior returner Maya Shoenhair has led all receivers with 8 catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns.  Freshman Isabelle Agnost has recorded 199 rushing yards on 30 carries and newcomer senior Hana Chelemedos has been steady at QB completing 22 of 39 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown.  On defense, senior Haley Chelemedos has led the team in tackles (13) and passes defended (3) followed closely by Leila Hamidi’s 12 tackles, in only 2 games, and Maya Shoenhair’s 11 tackles and 2 passes defended.  Avery Dement has added 8 tackles, Ines Coyne and Lily Cervenka 7 tackles, and Eloise Green 6 tackles.

It’s fun, it’s football.  Thank you cheerleaders and fans for all of your support at our only home game vs. Las Lomas.  Next up Concord and Alhambra on September 18.

Here come the Dons!
