How do they keep on doing this? Looking to give the Aca fans another heart attack with their ability to snatch a victory out of the jaws of defeat, the Lady Dons continued their winning ways with a hard-fought 5 set victory over the visiting Northgate Broncos on Tuesday night. In set one, #9 Piper Coy came out with guns ablaze with multiple spectacular kills that put the visitors on their heels right away. #17 Sophia Terry contributed with an ace and a kill of her own to keep it rolling. #13 Addi Ames had a nice tip kill to surprise the opposition and gain another point. #4 Mika Bocobo and #1 Jade Profilio both had well-placed serving aces to help the Dons win the set 25-20
In set two, #7 MaeLin Mason, hit one of her trademark kills to gain a point. Sophia had a roof block to keep the opposition at bay. #10 Annie Baker crushed a kill off a great set by #16 Emme Seelenbacher. #5 Mimi Maycock had a smooth block to keep the score close. #15 Rena Liu, the serving extraordinaire, had a smoking ace to keep the Dons in the set. Unfortunately, the Lady Dons couldn’t close the deal, and lost 23-25, evening the match up 1-1 in sets.
In set three, Northgate came out hot, building off the momentum from the last set, to lead 3-12 over the Dons. Jade started the comeback with 3 solid aces. Annie had a couple of kills to bring us closer to even. Sophia had a kill and a block to bring us back and actually take the lead in the set. 8 straight points by Acalanes showed true resiliency. With a 22-7 run, the Dons won the set 25-19, giving them a two to one set advantage.
In set four, with their backs against the wall, Northgate stepped up their intensity. MaeLin had a ridiculous one-handed dig to steal a point. #13 Addy Treter had a ferocious kill and block to help try and slow down the Northgate push for a fifth set. Jade had another ace, but it wasn’t enough as the Broncos forced another set with a 19-25 set four win.
Set five proved to be a back and forth, seesaw battle. Both teams had leads throughout this set, and the victory would go to the team with the most resiliency. Both Piper and Annie continued their excellent play with kills. MaeLin had a demoralizing kill that brought the roof down. Facing two match points, down 12-14, the Dons showed immense grit, fighting back to tie the score 14-14. With the score 17-16, Dons lead, Emme fooled everybody with a sneaky fake set to a hole in the defense that couldn’t be touched. With the final score 18-16 in the 5th set, the Dons took home the victory to run their league record to 2-0 while also winning their 6th overall.
