One of the hardest things about being on top is staying on top. Since moving into first place, the Acalanes boy’s tennis team now has a bullseye on its back. Miramonte is one of those competitors, and today we played them on their home courts. This time they had their number one player back in the lineup. Once again, the Dons were victorious but this time even more convincingly with a score of 6-3. This improves our league win-loss record to 6-1.
The match started out with a split of the six singles lines. Toni, Owens, and Reeder won their matches. We then had to win at least two of the three doubles lines. Instead, we won all three – all of them in straight sets. Brown and Hoeberechts won first giving us a 4-3 lead, and then Foster and Lofting secured the overall win. Thirty seconds later, Cortez and Riley padded our lead with a sixth win.
There are so many reasons we are achieving this success at an important time in the season. The confidence and belief the boys have in their abilities is translating into a lack of hesitation to swing out on even the most critical points. Go big or go home. We also have a dominant one-two punch in Toni playing in the #1 spot and Owens in the #2. Reeder has been consistently winning in the #6 spot and our doubles teams have developed that chemistry and gelling that make them hard to beat.
Next up is Las Lomas at home on Thursday and then a pair of matches against a tough Northgate team, Friday at home and Tuesday away. This Thursday we will also recognize our seniors who are playing their final year of high school tennis. We are hoping to get a nice turnout after the match to congratulate them. As always, thank you to our supportive family members who made the drive to Miramonte to root us on today. Go Dons! Coach Rick
