Varsity boys were unable to overcome Clayton Valley’s press defense Friday night. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 8-22. The Dons then got their offense going. They kept pace with the Ugly Eagles the last three quarters, scoring 50 points to the Ugly Eagles’ 52. But the first quarter deficit handcuffed the Dons, who ultimately lost 58-74.
Second quarter was the Dons’ best; they outscored the Ugly Eagles 21 to 14. Graham Smith grabbed back-to-back rebounds, one of which led to a fast break and a basket by Derek Kotarba.
The Dons’ performance from behind the arc was strong, with 3-pointers accounting for half of the Dons’ Friday night points: Scott Ruegg knocked down five, Jackson Aris-Dumas nailed three, and Graham Smith and Murphy Baker each added one.
Jackson was characteristically perfect from the free throw line, hitting 100%. Scott, Jackson, and Joey Carrillo all scored in double digits.
The Dons look forward to Dons Nation support at their final two home games of the regular season on Monday (Northgate) and Wednesday (Campo, with Senior night beforehand at 6:30). Go Dons!
