Dons Soar Past the Ugly Eagles to Close Out a 19–4 Season

The Acalanes JV boys water polo team wrapped up its season in winning fashion on Friday, October 23, defeating the Clayton Valley Ugly Eagles, 11–4. With sharp passing, determined defense, and contributions from across the roster, the Dons finished their season with an impressive 19–4 record—a strong result for a team that continued to grow and compete together all season long.

The Dons came out ready to go, building an early lead with a combination of counterattacks and well-placed shots. Spencer Salfen converted a skip shot before Colin Henitz worked around the goalie to find the net. Spencer added another goal on a breakaway, and Colin converted a five-meter penalty. Acalanes kept the pressure on, with Theo Penn finding the corner of the goal off a pass from Ryan Graff. Strong defensive work helped limit Clayton Valley’s chances, and Acalanes ended the first quarter ahead, 5–1.

The Dons continued to control the game in the second quarter, even as Clayton Valley made them work for every possession. Acalanes moved the ball around the perimeter, looked for openings, and stayed persistent on offense. Connor Dunton converted a five-meter penalty for a goal, while the defense continued to disrupt Clayton Valley’s attack. Ryan made another save in the cage as the Dons extended their lead to 7–1 at halftime.

The third quarter brought more defensive battles. Clayton Valley found the net, but Acalanes responded with strong work in the cage and a goal from Ben Paulsen. Ryan Graff made a series of important saves, helping the Dons weather Clayton Valley’s attempts to build momentum. Ben Lin was active on defense, intercepting passes and helping disrupt the Ugly Eagles’ offense. Colin added a clever finish over the goalie, and the Dons continued to challenge shots and protect their lead, heading into the final quarter up 10–2.

Clayton Valley kept fighting in the fourth, but Acalanes stayed composed. The Dons worked through a series of possessions, continued to defend as a unit, and looked for the right opportunity to score. After Clayton Valley added a goal, Spencer finished a passing sequence from Colin and Ben Paulsen to put another one on the board. The Dons held firm defensively through the closing minutes, sealing the 11–4 victory over Clayton Valley.

The final whistle marked more than another win. It marked the end of a season defined by teamwork, steady improvement, resilience, and players stepping up in different moments. From the counterattacks and penalty conversions to the defensive stops and saves in the cage, the Dons showed the value of a complete team effort.

Final seasons record: 19–4. The Dons finish the season with a win, a strong team identity, and plenty to be proud of. Congratulations to the players and coaches on an outstanding season!
