The Acalanes Dons JV boys water polo team faced a tough challenge against the Campolindo Cougars, last Wednesday, falling 18–7 in a game that demanded plenty of effort, grit, and resilience. While Campo built an early lead, the Dons kept battling, created scoring opportunities, and showed flashes of the offensive firepower that makes them fun to watch.
The Cougars struck first and quickly built momentum, taking advantage of several penalty opportunities to pull ahead. Ryan Graff made a series of strong saves in goal, getting his hands on shots and keeping the Dons in the fight. On the other end of the pool, Colin Henitz kept looking for openings, while the team worked to move the ball and find its rhythm against Campo’s defense.
The second quarter brought some offensive sparks for Acalanes. Colin broke away for a goal, and Finn Butler delivered an impressive shot to get on the scoreboard. Brady Pigeon added a goal of his own, while the Dons continued to look for chances to turn defensive stops into quick attacks. Campo maintained its advantage, but Acalanes kept pushing.
The Dons found more opportunities in the second half. Luke Wellen got going offensively, scoring twice, while Colin continued to lead the attack with three goals on the day. Brady added another, and Finn contributed a goal as the Dons showed they could find the net even against a challenging opponent.
Spencer Salfen and Mason Ross made their presence felt in a different way. Spencer drew three fouls and eventually earning an ejection and Mason drew two fouls—stopping just short of the three-foul mark. In a game with plenty of physical play, the Dons were working hard to create space and put pressure on the Cougars.
The fourth quarter brought more offensive movement, including a nice connection from Ryan to Brady for a goal. Luke and Colin continued to attack, and the Dons kept competing through the final whistle. Campo ultimately secured the 18–7 win, but Acalanes showed determination and continued to look for ways to generate offense.
Final score: Campolindo 18, Acalanes 7.
It was a tough matchup against a strong Cougars squad, but the Dons kept working, kept shooting, and kept battling. And with Colin, Luke, Brady, and Finn finding the net, there were positive moments to build on as the team moves forward.
Sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way—but there’s always another game, another opportunity, and another chance to make a splash.
