On Saturday night, the boys Varsity Dons basketball team defeated host San Rafael Bulldogs 59-49 to complete a sweep in the three-day tournament. It was a tough start for the Dons, who were down 8-0 to start, and 20-11 at the end of the first quarter. But, the Dons managed to break through San Rafael’s 2-3 zone defense and went an 8-0 run of their own to start the second quarter. Scott Ruegg’s 8 points and Theo Stoll’s 3-pointer sent the Dons to the locker room with a 29-29 halftime tie. In the third quarter, the Dons pulled ahead 41-39, despite having two players head to the bench in foul trouble. The Dons opened up their lead in the fourth quarter, hitting four 3-pointers and playing great team defense, with Jake Davis playing especially strong underneath. The 2019 San Rafael Classic Champions were paced by Scott Ruegg with 25 points (including five 3’s) and Graham Smith with 14 points. Scott and Graham were named first team all tournament players. Way to go boys!
