Earlier this season, the JV Dons battled Miramonte at home and narrowly lost 5-7 in a match that could have gone either way. This time around, the Matadors left no doubt – sweeping singles action and taking three of five in doubles for a 9-2 win on their home court.
When Miramonte hosts and in the spirit of dealers choice, they go with a best-of-3 format.
Miramonte took all six singles matches without dropping a set. A few callouts:
· Reed Lusch in Line 1 put up a good fight against a very tough opponent, but had to retire due to a shoulder issue that plagued him even before the season
· Eddie Leung in Line 2 had the closest battle by far, falling 5-7, 5-7
· Cade Yen in Line 3 had multiple 20+ hit rallies with a very consistent opponent
· Jack Roberts, Ilai Elbaz and Hirsch Peters in Lines 4, 5 and 6, respectively, held their own and took many games where they could. Four games in some sets.
Doubles fared better. Bryson Trimble and Parker Hulst in Line 1, and Cade Krick and Colin Wilson in Line 5, nearly took the first sets of their matches but ending up dropping in straight sets. In Line 2, Hugo De Torresand Brandon Fu gave their opponents all they could handle with some nifty net play and forced a tie-breaker, a true battle that ultimately went the Mats’ way.
On a positive note, Lines 3 and 4 secured victories. Tyler Anderson and Conrad Smith won handily at 6-2, 6-2 while Teddy Mrachek and Will Mrachek took a close first set at 7-5 but then imposed their wills en route to a 6-1 second set.
The growth across the team is evident, regardless of what the scoreboard shows. The JV squad should be holding their heads up high.
